Mental Health Support for (TU Delft) Students

Studying at TU Delft is intense. Deadlines, exams, group projects, part-time jobs, and trying to maintain a social life on top of it all. It’s a lot. And sometimes it becomes too much.

If you notice you’re not feeling like yourself, struggling to get out of bed, or that everything feels heavier than it should: you’re not alone. And there is help.

On this page, you’ll find an overview of where you can turn. Not as a list of phone numbers, but as an honest guide for when you need what kind of help.

Does this sound familiar?

Mental health isn’t black and white. You don’t have to be “in crisis” to seek help. Sometimes it starts small:

Sleep problems – Sleeping too much or too little
Loss of motivation – Nothing seems worth the effort anymore
Isolation – Withdrawing from friends
Concentration issues – Unable to focus
Racing thoughts – Your mind never stops
Low mood – A persistent empty or sad feeling
Anxiety – Constant unease or panic
Physical symptoms – Headaches, stomach aches, fatigue

If you recognize several of these signs, and they’ve lasted more than a few weeks: take it seriously. Seeking help is not weakness. It’s self-awareness.

Where can you go?

There are different types of support available. Below is an overview, from low-threshold to professional.

How do you ask for help?

We know that taking the step to ask for help can feel big. Here’s how you can start:

  • Acknowledge what you’re feeling. You don’t have to minimize it. If it feels heavy, it is heavy.
  • Choose a starting point. That could be a friend, the Student Support Line, or a coach at MoTiv. Start where you feel most comfortable.
  • Make contact. An email, a phone call, or just stopping by MoTiv at Voorstraat 60. You don’t have to know exactly what you want to say.
  • Give it time. Recovery is not a straight line. It’s okay if it takes a while. The important thing is that you’ve started.
💬
Tip: Write down beforehand what you want to discuss. It makes the first conversation easier. But you don’t have to: you can also just come and see where the conversation goes.

How do you help a friend?

Are you worried about someone? That’s already a sign that you care about them. Here’s what you can do:

  • Ask how they’re really doing. Not casually, but genuinely. And listen to the answer.
  • Don’t judge. You don’t have to solve it. Being present is often enough.
  • Share information. Tell them about the Student Support Line or MoTiv. Sometimes it’s easier to go somewhere when you know it exists.
  • Check in. Keep in touch, even when they say they’re fine.
  • Take care of yourself too. Supporting someone who’s struggling can be hard. Talk about it yourself as well.

Frequently asked questions

Is help at MoTiv really free? Yes. All MoTiv services are free for TU Delft students, PhDs, and staff.
Will my faculty or parents be informed? No. Conversations at MoTiv are confidential. We don’t share anything without your consent.
I don’t know if my problem is “serious enough” for help. If it’s a problem for you, it’s a problem. You don’t have to be in crisis to seek help. In fact, the sooner you seek help, the better.
How long before I can get an appointment? At MoTiv, we try to see you as soon as possible. For the Student Support Line, there’s no waiting time. For the student psychologist, there may be a waiting list.
Can I come even if I don’t know exactly what’s wrong? Absolutely. You don’t have to be able to explain anything. Together we’ll figure out what you need.
